Scallion pancake 蔥油餅 (green onion pancake) is a common street food that you can easily find in Taiwan. I remember taking a slice of green onion pancake from street vender after school and eating and walking home the same time. That would hold me over before dinner.
Scallion pancake is actually easy to make. We will make Scallion pancake from scratch.
Here is a quick and simple recipe with 3 main ingredients. It also allows you to pre-make & preserve it in the freezer and you can cook it whenever you want a small bite.
What you need to make Scallion Pancakes:
Ingredients: (8 single servings of 8 inches pancake)
– 3 Cups All purpose flour (Bread flour is okay)
– Green Onion (clean, no water residue cut into tiny sections) 2 Bunches
– 2 Tbsp Salt & Pepper
– Olive oil or vegetable oil 2 Tbsp
– 3/4 cup hot water & 1/4 cup cold water (mix before mixing flour)
Equipment :
– Large mixing bowl
– Dough rolling pin and mat
– Plastic wrap , plastic sheets, baking paper or wax paper
Key points and tricks:
- Use warm water to mix the dough
- Mix the dough with chopsticks or spatula until forming a ball, then use hands to knead the dough until the dough is not sticky too your hand and mixing bowl.
- Wrap and rest the dough for at least 60 minutes
- Use the plastic wrap or wax paper to roll the final dough and preserve it in the freezer for up to a week.
This recipe can yield 8 servings of 8 inch thin pancakes. If you prefer a thicker or larger pancake, feel free to divide the dough into larger sections. Please let me know if you tried the recipe by leaving the comment below.
